April 21, 2008Central's Feddersen wins league honor
PELLA—Central College’s Jared Feddersen (senior, Fort Dodge) and Joel Winters (sophomore, Hampton) have received Iowa Conference player of the week honors.
Feddersen was named in men’s tennis while Winters was the pick in men’s golf.
Feddersen was 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles last week. He moved into fifth place on Central’s career singles wins list with 55. The team’s No. 1 player the past two seasons, Feddersen led the Dutch to 9-0 wins over Morningside College and Loras College last Monday and Tuesday. He then scored Central’s only victory in an 8-1 setback against Luther College Friday evening.
Feddersen and the Dutch head to Cedar Rapids Thursday for the start of the Iowa Conference tournament.
Winters was honored after taking medalist honors in an 80-player field at the Buena Vista Spring Invitational Friday and Saturday. He led the Dutch to their third consecutive tournament title of the spring, winning the 36-hole, 17-team meet that was staged at the Spencer Golf and Country Club and the Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake. Competing in a field that included 10th-ranked Nebraska Wesleyan, Winters was a 1-shot winner with a 1-over-par 73-72—145.
It’s the ninth time in the past two seasons that a Central player has won the league’s golfer of the week award but it’s a first for Winters, who earned all-America distinction at last year’s NCAA Division III tourney.
The Dutch golf squad opens defense of its Iowa Conference crown Friday and Saturday at the Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City. The 72-hole tournament concludes May 2-3 at Oneota Golf Course at Decorah. Winters placed second at last year’s tournament behind teammate Andy Petersen (junior, Davenport, West HS).
