April 18, 2008Four Central players top tourney standings
SPENCER—It’s a Central College logjam atop the Buena Vista University Spring Invitational men’s golf tourney, with four Dutch players grabbing part of a five-way tie for first place Friday.
Andy Petersen (junior, Davenport, West HS), Andrew Townsend (sophomore, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS), Justin Smool (sophomore, Bagley, Panorama HS) and Joel Winters (sophomore, Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) each fired 1-over-par 73s on a chilly day at the Spencer Golf and Country Club. That propelled the Dutch to 292 and an 8-shot advantage over 10th-ranked Nebraska Wesleyan in the 17-team tournament. Central’s second unit, the White team, stands third at 312 and the Central Grey squad is 14th at 335.
The 36-hole tourney concludes Saturday at the par-72 Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake.
Central’s hot start was impressive given the 40-degree temperatures and brisk winds.
“In all honesty, at the start of the day in this weather, I thought 305 would be a good score,” coach Charlie Estabrook said. “But we just didn’t make big mistakes. We kept the ball in play and our chipping and putting were solid. You weren’t going to be hitting many greens on a day like this so you had to keep your wits about you, chip it close and make some putts.”
Reid Turner (senior, Des Moines, Grandview Park Baptist HS), the fifth golfer on Central’s first team, is tied for 12th at 77.
Justin Knock (senior, Williamsburg) shot 76 for the White team and is tied for eighth. Matt Stock (sophomore, Queen City, Mo., Schuyler County HS) shot 78 while Jason Harvey (freshman, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS) and Nick Reifert (senior, Bondurant, Bondurant-Farrar HS) each shot 79 and Reid Peterson (junior, Ankeny) had 81. A.J. Meyer (senior, DeSoto, ADM HS) is the Grey squad leader with 80.
“I was pretty happy to have nine of our top 10 players in the 70s,” Estabrook said.
But work remains, he cautioned.
“We have to go out and play golf again tomorrow, we can’t just expect it to happen,” Estabrook said.
Central will look to continue an impressive spring. After winning the 16-team Central Dutch Classic March 28-29, Central captured the 22-team Loras Invitational April 6-7.
