April 16, 2008Coe quiets Central bats
CEDAR RAPIDS—Coe College pitcher Ellie Schultz yielded just four hits in two games as the Central College softball team stumbled on the road 8-0 in five innings and 4-2.
Schultz and reliever Sonja Schwenker combined on a no-hitter in the abbreviated opener for the 23rd-ranked Kohawks (23-11 overall, 6-4 Iowa Conference).
In the nightcap Central (16-13 overall, 3-8 conference) managed just one hit in the first six frames but finally broke through late. In the sixth inning center fielder Alysha Overturf (sophomore, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) reached on an error, stole a base and scored an unearned tally. In the seventh inning, Central got singles by shortstop Afton Nelson (sophomore, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) and first baseman Ryann Engholm (junior, Bloomington, Minn., Thomas Jefferson HS), and a run-scoring double by designated player Trisha Shimak (freshman, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS). That put the tying runs on second and third with one out, but Central’s next two hitters took called third strikes.
“I thought our at-bats were better in the second game,” coach George Wares said. “We had a chance in the seventh but obviously the called thirds hurt us.”
Kiley Lythberg (freshman, Mount Prospect, Ill.) suffered the loss in the opener after throwing three innings and
is 7-7. Megan Swingen (junior, Woden, Woden-Crystal Lake HS) gave up two earned runs on six hits in six innings of the nightcap, walking one and striking out two.
While the Dutch were charged with just two errors on the day, Wares said defense was an issue in both contests.
“We just made some plays you can’t expect to make and still win,” he said. “There were five times where we had chances for people to step up and make a play and five times we didn’t get it done.
“I thought Kiley (Lythberg) actually didn’t pitch that badly but we gave Coe too many extra outs. And I thought Megan (Swingen) pitched well.”
The Dutch close out their home schedule with a league twinbill against the University of Dubuque Saturday at 2 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Atheltics Complex field. Dubuque was swept at Buena Vista Wednesday and is 11-15 overall with a 0-10 league mark.
“We’ve just got to keep plugging away,” Wares said.
It will be Alumni Day at Central as well as Senior Recognition Day. The Dutch will salute three of their four NCAA Division III championship squads as the 1988, 1993 and 2003 will be celebrating their 20th, 15th and fifth anniversary reunions, respectively.
