Big seventh leads to Central romp
PELLA—In coach Adam Steven’s 100th career victory, the Central College baseball team utilized a seven-run seventh inning Monday to run past Grinnell College 11-1.
Central’s offensive fireworks came less than 24 hours after plating only two runs in 16 innings in a doubleheader at Wartburg College.
“The guys responded well after yesterday,” said Stevens. “Today was the first time all year we fired on all cylinders.”
Stevens was especially happy with result considering the Dutch (14-12) lost 11-5 at Grinnell (12-9) March 26.
“Our improvement over the last two weeks really showed today,” he said. “Hopefully we can continue to play well.”
After leading 4-1 after six innings, the Dutch strung together seven consecutive hits which resulted in seven runs and the game being halted early.
Central’s offensive fireworks were keyed by the middle of the lineup which went 8-for-12 on the day. Sophomore right fielder Anthony Bazant (Omaha, Neb., Ralston HS) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior shortstop Jake Jadlowski (Omaha, Neb., Ralston HS) went 3-for-4 with three runs knocked in and a pair of runs scored. Senior first baseman Michael Edwards (Pella) was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored and was a home run away from hitting for the cycle.
Senior center fielder Aaron Heffernan (Ottumwa) chipped in with a 2-for-2 performance scoring two runs and had an RBI. Heffernan recorded two hits in the seventh inning.
Dutch starting pitcher Trevor Talbott (sophomore, Sioux City, East HS) went six innings, scattering five hits, allowing one run, while striking out two and walking none.
“Trevor had a good start and competed well,” said Stevens.
Adding to Stevens’ delight, the Dutch recorded no errors and have had just two in their last eight outings.
“We played well defensively,” he said. “We are showing consistency in the field and need to continue it.”
The Dutch return Wednesday for a nine-inning Iowa Conference clash with Loras Collage (11-14 overall, 4-6 Iowa Conference) at 3 p.m. in Pella. The two squads split April 1 in Dubuque with the Duhawks winning the first 10-6 and the Dutch rallying for a 9-3 win in the nightcap.
