April 13, 2008Wartburg pitchers quiet Central bats
WAVERLY—After making an unexpected trip to Waverly, the Central College baseball team could produce only two runs, falling 4-1 and 3-1 to Wartburg College in an Iowa Conference doubleheader Sunday.
Precipitation in Pella on Friday and Saturday forced the series to be moved to Waverly for an unusual doubleheader. A nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning contest was the Iowa Conference protocol after the games on Friday and Saturday were postponed.
In the opener, the Dutch (13-12 overall, 4-6 conference) ran into 2007 all-Iowa Conference first-team pitcher Aaron Saeugling who held Central scoreless over 8.1 innings and allowed three hits while striking out seven. The Dutch countered with their ace pitcher Brett Mahan (senior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) who gave up four runs over eight innings while allowing 10 hits, striking out two and walking one.
The Knights (13-10, 7-1 Iowa Conference) scored a run in the second and third innings before plating a pair in the eighth. Central’s tally came in the ninth inning when sophomore third baseman Ben Tressel (Dubuque, Hempstead HS) scored following a bases-loaded walk to junior left fielder Derek Knutson (Richland, Wash., Yorkville, Ill. HS).
The second game was another low-scoring affair. Wartburg plated two unearned runs in the second inning as a result of the game’s lone error. The Dutch pulled within one in the third when senior first baseman Michael Edwards (Pella) knocked in junior shortstop Jake Jadlowski (Omaha, Neb., Ralston HS). The score stayed at 2-1 until the ninth when the Knights scored the final tally.
In the nightcap, Tressel went 3-for-4. Starting pitcher Jeremy Kippley (senior, Denison, Denison-Schleswig HS) went five innings, giving up three hits, two unearned runs, while striking four and issuing four walks.
The Dutch return Monday for a nine-inning clash in Pella with Grinnell College at 3 p.m.
