Central blanks Simpson 9-0

PELLA—Sweeping every match in straight sets, the Central College men’s tennis team blanked Simpson College 9-0 Monday.

Coach Bryan Mours used an all-underclass lineup, moving Luke Boyd (sophomore, Fort Dodge) to No. 1 singles and giving Jacob Veldhuizen (freshman, Wausau, Wis., East HS), Joel Druvenga (junior, Spencer) and Nick Schnicker (freshman, Burlington) a shot at varsity action. It was the first varsity singles match of the season for Druvenga and Schnicker. Both were 6-0, 6-1 winners.

“I wanted to see where we’re at and the kids all performed really well,” Mours said. “The guys who hadn’t been playing went out and competed exactly like we hoped they would.”

It was Central’s second 9-0 win over Simpson. The teams met in indoor action at Pella Feb. 23.

Central (9-10) will be home again Saturday, meeting Grinnell College at 10 a.m. and Iowa Conference rival Loras College at 3 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex courts.

The Dutch fell at Grinnell last year 8-1 but defeated Loras at Decorah 6-3.

Central’s match with Morningside College, originally slated for Tuesday, has been moved to Monday at 3 p.m. at Ames.
