Central captures Loras tourney crown

ASBURY—Using a strong second round, the Central College men’s golf team rallied for its second straight spring tournament title, capturing the 22-team Loras Invitational Monday.

Trailing by a stroke after Sunday’s round at the par-72 Meadows Golf Course, the Dutch surged past 18-hole leader Carthage (Wis.) in 32-degree weather to win with 300-303—603, 11 shots better than No. 6-ranked Illinois Wesleyan, which finished second. Carthage was third at 299-320—619 with Central’s second unit, the White squad, fourth at 303-324—627. The next Iowa Conference rival was Coe which placed ninth at 314-328—642.

Reid Turner (senior, Des Moines, Grandview Park Baptist HS) fired 73-75—148 and tied for first in the medalist standings but lost in a four-way playoff to Illinois Wesleyan’s Mike DeRuntz and settled for a tie for second. Andy Petersen (junior, Davenport, West HS) tied for fifth at 73-76—149 with Andrew Townsend (sophomore, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) tied for 10th at 77-75—152, Joel Winters (sophomore, Hampton) 13th at 77-77—154 and Justin Smool (sophomore, Bagley, Panorama HS) tied for 18th at 77-80—155.

Jason Harvey (freshman, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS) was 12th for the Central White team at 73-80—153. Justin Knock (senior, Williamsburg) followed in 14th at 76-69—155 with Reid Petersen (junior, Ankeny) tied for 18th at 76-81—157, Nick Reifert (senior, Bondurant, Bondurant-Farrar HS) tied for 36th at 78-84—162 and Matt Stock (sophomore, Queen City, Mo., Schuyler County HS) tied for 59th at 79-87—166.

The Dutch, who also won the 16-team Central Dutch Classic March 28-29, next head to Waverly for the Wartburg Invitational Saturday and Sunday. The tourney is slated for the par-72 Centennial Oaks Golf Course and the par-70 Waverly Golf Club
