Regionally ranked foes outlast Central

PELLA—Central College pushed a pair of regionally ranked men’s tennis opponents before tumbling to Carleton College (Minn.) 8-1 and perennial Iowa Conference power Coe College 6-3 Saturday.

Coe (13-4) is rated seventh in the ITA Central Region Division III while Carleton is ranked eighth.

“I thought our Carleton match this morning set the stage for playing well against Coe,” coach Bryan Mours said. “I sound like a broken record but playing this tough schedule week in and week out has helped us narrow the gap with the top teams in our league significantly.”

Dan Bowser (freshman, Fort Dodge) and Nick Rohner (senior, Wichita, Kan., Kapaun Mt. Carmel HS)  scored an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles against Carleton and Bowser extended his match to three sets at No. 3 singles.

Central (8-10), which hasn’t defeated Coe since 2000, hadn’t even scored on the Kohawks since 2001, but jumped to a 2-1 lead following doubles’ competition. Bowser and Rohner pulled out a 9-8 (5) victory at No. 3 doubles while Jared Feddersen (senior, Fort Dodge)  and Lucas Boyd (sophomore, Fort Dodge) were 9-7 winners at No. 1 doubles.

“Nick Rohner and Dan Bowser played two great doubles matches,” Mours said. “And Jared Feddersen and Lucas Boyd were down 7-1 and came all the way back to win 9-7. That was huge.”

Justin Scherff (senior, Denison, Denison-Schleswig HS) prevailed at No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-2, but Coe swept the other five singles matches to secure the win.

“Justin Scherff, I feel, played his best collegiate singles match,” Mours said.

Mours said the Dutch had opportunities to do even more damage, but said it was hard to be disappointed in his club.

"The kids fought hard,” he said. “I couldn’t ask for anything more. The heart, character and effort were all there today.”

The Dutch faces Morningside College Tuesday at Ames. The Mustangs’ season got a late start, opening with a 6-3 upset of Division II Augustana College (S.D.) Friday at Sioux Falls, S.D. Central and Morningside did not meet last season.
