Central takes two from Martin Luther

PELLA—Central College played shutout and errorless baseball Friday, downing Martin Luther (Minn.) 13-0 and 9-0 in a non-conference doubleheader.

The Dutch (11-10) pitching staff gave up two walks over the course of the twinbill.

“There were a lot of positives that came from today’s games,” said coach Adam Stevens. “Our pitchers threw strikes which resulted in us only having two walks and that was good to see. We also had no errors. Those are a couple of positives to build off of.”

Central outhit Martin Luther (0-2) 19-9 in the two games.

Leading the Dutch offensive onslaught was senior Michael Edwards Josh Nalan(Pella) who went 3-for-6 with four RBIs and five runs scored in the two games. Edwards also smashed his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left-center, in the bottom of the first in game one.

“It’s nice to see Mike getting into his groove,” said Stevens. “He has been working very hard at it.”

Joining Edwards in the home run column was sophomore catcher Blake Smith (Polk City, North Polk HS). Smith topped off a 2-for-3, four-RBI game two with a roundtripper to left field in the bottom of the third inning.

“Blake is learning more with each at bat,” Stevens said. “He is developing into a nice hitter. He’s also a smart catcher and does a nice job calling pitches.”

Central also saw solid offensive production again from freshman Caleb Rangel (Rock Island, Ill., Alleman HS) who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and five runs scored in the double dip. Rangel also made his collegiate debut on the pitching mound, throwing two innings, allowing a hit, striking out two and walking none.

Blake SmithJoining Rangel on the hill in the first game were starter Brett Mahan (senior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) and Kyle Fuerstenberg (senior, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS). Mahan went four, surrendering five hits, with three strike outs and no walks in getting the win. Fuerstenberg threw the sixth inning, allowing one hit, striking out one and walking one.

In the second game, starter Jeremy Kippley (senior, Denison) threw five innings, allowing one hit, striking out one and walking one. Senior Ben Gander (Maxwell, Collins-Maxwell HS) threw one inning with sophomore Josh Nalan (Sheffield, SCMT HS) making his Central debut in the sixth, where he struck out one.

The Dutch have little time to savor the sweep as they return tomorrow at 1 p.m. for another doubleheader in Pella with Ashford University.
