Dutch topple Wartburg again, 7-2

WAVERLY--A doubles sweep propelled the Central College men's tennis team to a 7-2 victory at Wartburg College Wednesday.

The duos of Chris Bliss (senior, Ottumwa)-Justin Scherff (senior, Denison, Denison-Schleswig HS), Luke Boyd (sophomore, Fort Dodge)-Dan Bowser (freshman, Fort Dodge) and Jared Feddersen (senior, Fort Dodge)-Nick Rohner (senior, Wichita, Kan., Kapaun Mt. Carmel HS) each scored doubles wins.

In singles the Dutch got decisions from Boyd at No. 2, Bowser at No. 3, Bliss at No. 4 and Jacob Dreyer (freshman, Cedar Falls) at No. 6.

Central (8-8) had blanked Wartburg 9-0 in indoor action at Pella Feb. 16 in the Knights’ season opener, but coach Bryan Mours knew his club would face a much better-prepared opponent Wednesday.

“I felt really good about it,” he said afterwards. “We played some really good doubles this evening and in singles we’re performing well also. It makes for a nice trip home.”

The Dutch play host to a triangular Saturday at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex courts. Central meets Carleton College (Minn.) at 8:30 a.m. and Iowa Conference power Coe College at 11:30 a.m. in one of the more challenging days on an already demanding schedule. Coe, which blanked Central 9-0 last year, is 12-3 while Carleton is 13-2.

Dutch women fall—Central’s women’s tennis squad, playing an abbreviated spring schedule, was stopped at Wartburg 8-1 Wednesday. Central had defeated the Knights twice in the fall campaign, 6-3 and 5-4, but doesn’t have its full lineup for the spring semester.

“It’s a little disappointing since we beat them twice in the fall, but when you don’t have your No. 1 player (Hilary Baehr, junior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS), it really makes a big difference on the rest of the lineup. But they’re still fighting and battling.”

The Dutch are 0-4 in the spring and are slated to face Simpson at Pella Monday at 3:30 p.m.
