Central leads Dutch Classic after first round

OSKALOOSA—With three of the top four individual scores, the Central College men’s golf team holds a commanding 14-stroke lead after Friday’s first round of the 36-hole Central Dutch Classic at the Edmundson Golf Course.

Central’s Red team fired a 3-under-par 277 on the par-70 course with Iowa Wesleyan seconds with 291 in the 16-team tournament. Central’s score is one stroke off the program record which was carded at the Ryerson Fall Classic at the Pleasantville Golf Course in 1992.

“I’m very happy with how we played,” said coach Charlie Estabrook. “It’s good to be coming back from spring break and have guys playing well. I’m proud of all of the below par scores on the back nine. It shows a lot of character and grinding from our guys."

Junior Andrew Petersen (Davenport, West HS)  is tied with Iowa Wesleyan’s Jordan Campton at a 2-under par 68 for the individual lead.

“Andy has been playing well all spring, so I am not surprised with his score,” said Estabrook. “The guys played well around him.”

Justin Smool (sophomore, Bagley, Panorama HS) and Joel Winters (sophomore, Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) are tied for third place 68.

“Justin hit the ball really well,” said Estabrook. “He had a lot of looks at birdies and just couldn’t get them to fall.

“Joel’s finally found it. I think he’s comfortable with his swing and his confidence is back where it needs to be.”

A mere two shots behind Smool and Winters is Reid Turner (senior, Des Moines, Grandview Park Baptist HS) in a tie for fifth at 71.

“He started off slowly but finished great,” said Estabrook. “It shows the grit and determination he has and why he’s a good leader.”

Sophomore Andrew Townsend (Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) is tied for eighth at 72.

“He grinded it out all day,” said Estabrook. “He had a good shot at a lot of birdies. He’s a steady player and is consistent and I like that about him.”

Central’sWhite squad is in third (298) with the Black squad ninth (316) and the Gray squad 16th (349).

The Dutch return tomorrow for the second round which tees off with a shotgun start at 11 a.m.
