Central plates 15 in win over Buena Vista

PELLA—The top half of the Central College baseball lineup keyed a 15-7 Iowa Conference win over Buena Vista Friday.

Central’s 1-5 hitters combined to go 14-for-26 (.538) and knocked in 10 runs as the Dutch improved to 8-7 overall and 3-1 in conference.

Freshman right fielder Caleb Rangel (Rock Island, Ill., Alleman HS), the No. 5 hitter, keyed Central’s onslaught, going 4-for-6 with three RBIs.

“Caleb has been putting together good at bats,” said coach Adam Stevens. “It was nice to see some hits falling for him and hopefully it will continue tomorrow.”

Leadoff hitter Anthony Bazant (sophomore, centerfield, Omaha, Neb., Ralston HS) went 3-for-4, scored four runs and had two RBIs. No. 2 hitter Jake Jadlowski (junior, shortstop, Omaha, Neb., Ralston HS) was 2-for-6 with two RBIs. Following Jadlowski was Michael Edwards (senior, left fielder, Pella) who was 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Cleanup hitter Derek Knutson (junior, catcher, Richland, Wash., Yorkville HS) was 2-for-6 with three RBIs.

Stevens was pleased with the offensive output.

“Offensively, I liked our approach,” he said. “We have worked hard to improve our swings. Hopefully we continue to hit well. If we do that, we should have a good weekend.”

The Dutch wasted little time in the game as a double by Rangel plated Edwards and Bazant in the first inning.

After scoring a run in the second and third innings, the Dutch added four in the fourth. The big blow came when Knutson had a two-run RBI single which scored Bazant and third baseman Ben Tressel (sophomore, Dubuque, Hempstead HS).

Buena Vista (5-5 overall, 0-1 conference) battled back, closing to within 9-5 in the eighth. However, six Dutch runs in the ninth put the game out of reach.

Central’s ninth-inning barrage was buoyed by a two-run home run to left field by freshman Jarred Lackey (Somerton, Ariz., Cibola HS). It was Lackey’s first collegiate hit.

Central takes the diamond again Saturday for a doubleheader against Buena Vista at noon in Pella. The game was originally scheduled to start at 1 p.m. but was changed due to late afternoon rain in the forecast.
