March 25, 2008Central’s Mahan wins league honor
PELLA—Central College baseball pitcher Brett Mahan (senior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) has been named the Iowa Conference male athlete of the week.
Mahan picked up a pair of wins to raise his season record to 3-0. He went seven innings in an 8-7 victory over Augsburg College (Minn.) last Tuesday in Mesa, Ariz., limiting the Auggies to four earned runs on seven hits while striking out 10 batters with two walks. Saturday he came back and fired a complete-game one-hitter as Central defeated Simpson College 3-1 at Pella. He fanned five and walked two.
The wins upped his career total to 20, the most in school history. He also holds the school career strikeouts mark with 187, fanning 25 in his first three games while compiling a 3.24 earned run average.
It’s the fourth time that Mahan has been named the league’s baseball player of the week received the award, but his first male athlete of the week award. He’s a two-time all-Iowa Conference selection.
Central is 7-6 overall and 2-1 in league play heading into a non-conference game at Grinnell College Wednesday.
