March 8, 2008Central men fall at Benedictine
ST. JOSEPH, MO—The Central College men’s and women’s tennis squads were downed by NAIA power Benedictine College (Kan.) 9-0 and 7-2, respectively, Saturday.
Recent snowfall in Missouri forced the Dutch men to cancel outdoor matches with Missouri Valley College and Westminster College (Mo.) and schedule the indoor duals with Benedictine (3-0). The Benedictine men, rated No. 15 in NAIA, snapped Central’s four-match winning streak, dropping the Dutch to 5-4.
“The men played well,” said first-year coach Bryan Mours. “We ran into a tough squad, but we want to play top quality competition week in and week out as we get ready for the (Iowa Conference) tournament.”
The Central women (0-1) opened their abbreviated spring season with wins from Faith Bliss (sophomore, Ottumwa) at No. 5 singles and Whitney Visser (senior, Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Brigitte Newman (freshman, Albia) at No. 3 doubles.
“It was our first match of the spring and the women did an excellent job,” said Mours. “They fought hard even though everyone was forced to move up a spot with our No.1 player (Hilary Baehr) being abroad this semester.”
Both squads travel to California for a spring break trip. The men and women open their excursion in Costa Mesa, Calif. with Vanguard (Calif.) March 17 before traveling to Irvine, Calif. to face Concordia (Calif.) March 19.
