Feb. 26, 2008Second-half swoon halts Central, 91-82
DUBUQUE—The Central College men’s basketball team saw a 38-29 halftime lead dissolve as the University of Dubuque roared back in the second half to secure a 91-82 Iowa Conference tournament quarterfinal clash Tuesday.
Dubuque (14-11) utilized a 31-8 run over the opening 10:53 of the second half to blow past Central (14-10) which was never able come closer than six points the remainder of the way. The Spartans were led by Tyler Daugherty who poured in 38 points, going 15 for 15 from the free-throw line.
“Daugherty was unbelievable,” coach Mike Boschee said.
After shooting 38.5 percent from the floor in the first half, the Spartans shot a robust 66.7 percent after the intermission, outscoring the Dutch 62-44 in the second half.
Guard Miguel Ley (sophomore, San Antonio, Texas) paced the Dutch with 24 points and forward Keith Pedersen (senior, Jefferson, Jefferson-Scranton HS) grabbed a team-high eight boards.
“We played well in the first half,” Boschee said. “I still liked the shots we were getting in the second half, we just weren’t hitting when we had open looks.”
The loss ends a season when the Dutch (14-10) recorded the program’s most wins since 1994-95. It also closes the careers of seniors Zak Clark (guard, Fort Dodge, St. Edmond HS), Brett DeHoogh (guard, Clive, Valley HS) Simeon Lang (forward, Jefferson, Jefferson-Scranton HS), AJ Meyer (guard, De Soto, ADM HS) and Pedersen who elevated the program from a 7-19 mark during their freshman campaign in 2004-05.
The Central seniors have also made their mark individually on the record books as Pedersen, the current NCAA Division III leader in field-goal percentage (69.7), closes with the highest career (61.1 percent) and season field-goal percentage surpassing Kent Van Vark (1976-80) in each. Clark has the most career 3-pointers (175) while DeHoogh boasts the career assists (465) and assists per game (4.7) records as well as the season assists (141) mark he set in 2005-06.
“We talked afterwards and I told our seniors that Central’s not a doormat in the Iowa Conference anymore because of them,” Boschee said. “They also helped establish our program as one with a family atmosphere. They’re good leaders and they’re a great group of guys to work with. It’s going to be tough going to practice next year and not have them there.
“But we’ve got some good young guys in the program now and I think the future is bright.”
