Central notches two more wins

PELLA—The Central College men’s tennis team preserved both conference and family bragging rights with 9-0 wins over both Simpson College and Carroll College (Wis.).      

The victory over Simpson upped Central’s mark against Iowa Conference foes to 2-0 for first-year coach Bryan Mours. In the nightcap Central not only improved to 5-3 overall, but gave their coach a victory over his younger brother, Craig Mours, who is in his first season as head coach at Carroll.

In the opener against Simpson (0-2 overall, 0-5 Iowa Conference) Central (5-3 overall, 3-0 Iowa Conference) had singles wins from Jared Feddersen (senior, Fort Dodge) (No. 1), Luke Boyd (sophomore, Fort Dodge) (No. 2), Dan Bowser (freshman, Fort Dodge) (No. 3), Nick Rohner (senior, Wichita, Kan.) (No. 4), Jacob Dreyer (freshman, Cedar Falls) (No. 5), Joel Druvenga (junior, Spencer) (No. 6).

In doubles Chris Bliss (senior, Ottumwa) and Justin Scherff (senior, Denison, Denison-Schleswig HS) (No. 1), Jacob Veldhuizen (freshman, Wausau, Wis.) and Nick Schnicker (freshman, Burlington) (No. 2)and Mike Hammond (senior, Boone) and Drew Randol (freshman, Pella).

“We had a great opportunity to play new kids versus Simpson,” said Mours. “They stepped up and did everything I asked of them.”

In the nightcap the Dutch had singles wins from Feddersen (No.1), Boyd (No. 2), Bowser (No.3), Rohner (No. 4), Scherff (No. 5) and Dreyer (No. 6).

The doubles wins were recorded by Feddersen and Boyd (No. 1), Bliss and Scherff (No. 2), and Bowser and Dan BowserRohner (No. 3).

“I feel we played extremely well in the evening matches,” said Mours. “We played smart in our matches.”

Central has next week off and will travel to Marshall, Mo. for a triangular with NAIA Missouri Valley and NCAA Division III Westminster (Mo.) March 8. The Dutch will take on Missouri Valley at 8:30 a.m. and Westminster at 11:30 a.m.

“It is exciting to go there,” said Mours. “I am hoping we will be able to play outside.”
