Feb. 23, 2008Cold shooting costs Central
DECORAH—A 57-point second half powered Luther College to a 90-45 rout of the Central College men’s basketball team in the Iowa Conference regular-season finale Saturday.
Icy shooting frustrated the Dutch, who hit just 13 of 52 shots from the floor for 25 percent, including a season-low 16 percent in the second half. After knocking down 16 3-point baskets in a 73-71 upset win over Buena Vista Wednesday night, the Dutch could muster just 3-of-18 from long range Saturday (16.7 percent). It was Central’s fifth-largest margin of defeat in school history and its worst loss since Upper Iowa won by 47 points in a 103-56 conquest in 1966.
Luther, which had little success against the rest of the league, completed a season sweep of Central. The Norse close at 7-18 overall and 3-13 in conference play, with two of the wins coming against the Dutch.
Central, 14-9 overall, is 7-9 in the league, leaving the Dutch in a tie for fifth
place with Cornell College. Central holds the tiebreaker over the Rams and will travel to the University of Dubuque Tuesday to take on the fourth-place Spartans in the first round of the six-team conference tournament.
Central never led Saturday. The Norse jumped to a 6-1 advantage and were up 33-23 at intermission. The second half was all Luther as the lead was extended to 47-28 in the first 5:33. The Norse shot 53.6 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from 3-point range. They also dominated the glass, 49-22.
Guard Brett DeHoogh (senior, Clive, Valley HS) had eight points and four rebounds while guard Miguel Ley (sophomore, San Antonio, Texas, Judson HS) had seven points and four boards.
