Two more wins for Central

PELLA—The Central College men’s tennis squad surged past the .500 mark with a pair of dual-meet indoor wins Saturday.

The Dutch, 4-2, got past Monmouth (Ill.) 6-3 before blanking Iowa Conference rival Wartburg 9-0 at H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse.

After dropping matches at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles against Monmouth, Central lost just one match the rest of the day.

“It was a really great day,” first-year coach Bryan Mours said. “We finally started playing the way I’ve been asking them to play. I was really pleased with our confidence. They got after things the way I expect them to.”

Mours was especially happy with the performance of Luke Boyd (sophomore, Fort Dodge) at No. 2 singles. He breezed past Monmouth’s Kevin Kramernjarin 6-2, 6-1 and Wartburg’s Andrew Koehler 6-2, 6-2.

“Luke played extremely well,” Mours said.

Central is home again next Saturday, facing Simpson at 11 a.m. and Carroll (Wis.) at 5 p.m. There will be a little more on the line for Mours in the match against Carroll than in a typical non-conference match—his brother, Craig Mours, is in his first season as head coach at Carroll.

“He tells me they’re very young,” Mours said. “He brought in eight freshmen, but they’re pretty deep. I expect it to be a tough match.”
