Cold-shooting Central men falter, 75-62

PELLA—The University of Dubuque knocked down 11 of its first 18 3-point shots and outscored the Central College men’s basketball team 75-62 Saturday in Iowa Conference action.    

Guard Taylor Blum drilled six threes and finished with a game-high 30 points for the Spartans on 10-of-14 shooting. Guard Tyler Daugherty added 20 points and five assists.

Meanwhile Central hit just seven of 25 from long range and shot only 31 percent from the field in falling to 13-8 overall and 6-8 in league play.

Dubuque (12-10 overall, 8-7 conference) trailed 10-8 early in the first half but ran off 13 unanswered points en route to a 42-26 halftime lead.

Guards Brett DeHoogh (senior, Clive, Valley HS) and Miguel Ley (sophomore, San Antonio, Texas, Judson HS) each had 10 points for Central. Center Zach Cooper (sophomore, Johnston) had eight points and eight rebounds. Dubuque outrebounded Central 40-34.  AJ Meyer                                  

Central makes its final regular-season home appearance Wednesday, taking on first place Buena Vista in a league women’s-men’s doubleheader with the men’s game starting at approximately 8 p.m. at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. Buena Vista got past Central 65-58 when the teams met at Storm Lake Jan. 12. The Beavers, who were idle Saturday, are 19-4 overall and 13-1 in conference action.
