Feb. 13, 2008Central men’s rally comes up short at Coe
CEDAR RAPIDS—A second-half surge by the Central College men’s basketball team came up short as Coe College held on to win 75-74 Wednesday in an Iowa Conference clash.
After trailing by as much as 10 in the second half, Central (13-7 overall, 6-7 Iowa Conference) had a chance to win the game in the closing seconds but a pair of shots and a tip attempt went astray.
Coe was up 46-39 at intermission but Central went on a 22-9 run over a span of 8:38 in the second half to take 51-48 advantage only to have Coe (13-10 overall, 8-6 Iowa Conference) go up 75-70 with 2:02 remaining.
Central held the Kohawks scoreless the rest of the way, getting a key stop and rebound with 20 seconds remaining, setting up the frantic finish.
“It was a well-played game by both teams,” said coach Mike Boschee. “Both teams wanted it pretty bad and it came right down to the wire. We had some good looks (at the end).”
After hitting just 35.5 percent from the field in the first half, Central shot a sizzling 55.2 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range after intermission.
“In the second half we were good in all aspects,” said Boschee. “We had a lot of good performances but Coe played a good ballgame. We knew they would be tough to beat at home.
Guard Zak Clark (senior, Fort Dodge, St. Edmond HS) buoyed Central’s late charge by scoring all 13 of his points in the final 10:57 while hitting three 3-pointers. Clark also registered a team-high four assists.
Guard Brett DeHoogh (senior, Clive, Valley HS) had a team-high 17 points, shooting 6-for-9 from the floor. Forward Keith Pedersen (senior, Jefferson, Jefferson-Scranton HS) pulled down a game-high 10 boards and scored eight points on 4-for-6 shooting.
Despite the setback, because of losses by Simpson and Wartburg Wednesday, the Dutch clinched a berth in the six-team conference tournament for the ninth time in the past 10 years. Central is in fifth place.
Central returns Saturday for a home women’s/men’s doubleheader against the University of Dubuque with the men scheduled to tip off at approximately 4 p.m. The Spartans downed the Dutch 77-64 Jan. 19 in Dubuque. Dubuque (11-10 overall, 7-7 conference) defeated Luther 70-49 Thursday in Dubuque.
