DeHoogh sparks Central comeback win at Simpson

INDIANOLA— Guard Brett DeHoogh (senior, Clive, Valley HS) made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 40 seconds en route to a career-high 30 points and five assists to propel the Central College men’s basketball team to a 78-73 Iowa Conference win at Simpson College Thursday.

DeHoogh was 5-for-9 from long distance while grabbing six rebounds and blocking four shots.

“Brett had a huge part in winning us the game by knocking down free throws at the end,” said head coach Mike Boschee. “He hit clutch 3-pointers throughout, and we needed that from him.”

Central (13-6 overall, 6-6 Iowa Conference) led by as much as 16 points in the first half only to see Simpson (5-15 overall, 2-9 Iowa Conference) build a 12 point advantage with 9:23 remaining in the game.

A late 14-4 Dutch run gave Central the necessary cushion to withstand a late blizzard of Simpson 3-pointers that crawled the Storm to within 74-73 as 19 seconds remained. DeHoogh and center Preston Davidson (sophomore, Northwood, Northwood-Kensett HS) combined to make four free throws in the final 15 seconds to ice the clash.

“It was a see-saw game throughout,” said Boschee. “Our guys showed a lot of character and pride and made plays down the stretch to get us the win.”

Justin MadsenGuard Zak Clark (senior, Fort Dodge, St. Edmond HS) buoyed Central’s late fury with nine points in a 45-second span that started with 2:06 remaining.

“Zak’s 3-pointers down that stretch really ignited us,” said Boschee.

NCAA Div. III field-goal percentage leader Keith Pedersen (senior, forward, Jefferson, Jefferson-Scranton HS) continued his efficient ways, shooting 5-for-8 (62.5-percent) from the floor and pulling down six boards.

Central travels to Cedar Rapids to face Coe College Wednesday. The Dutch won the season’s first match-up 77-58 Jan. 16 in Pella.
