Ted Dirkx

Dirkx fifth for Central

SIOUX CITY—Central College’s Ted Dirkx (freshman, Alleman, North Polk HS) recorded his best collegiate outing, placing fifth at the non-scored Briar Cliff Invitational wrestling tourney Saturday.

Dirkx posted a 3-2 record competing at 285 pounds. Also a member of the Dutch football squad, Dirkx reported late for wrestling and had compiled a 1-4 record prior to Saturday. Both of his losses were to Justin Kyte of Sioux Falls (S.D.). Kyte was an 11-3 winner in the first round, but Dirkx fought to within 10-7 in the wrestlebacks.

“Ted really closed the gap,” coach Eric Van Kley said. “He wrestled very well. He got a late start because of football but I thought he really turned the corner this week. He was very aggressive.”

Dirkx was among just five Central wrestlers in the tourney. The Dutch return to dual meet action Tuesday, traveling to the University of Dubuque for a 7 p.m. match.
