Jan. 26, 2008Centrals drops a pair of matches
ROCK ISLAND, ILL.—The Central College men’s tennis team opened the 2008 season with a pair of top opponents and fell to both Augustana (Ill.) and St. Ambrose 6-3 Saturday.
In the opener against Augustana, Jared Feddersen (senior, Fort Dodge) was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at No. 1 singles and Dan Bowser (freshman, Fort Dodge) was a 6-4, 7-6 (6-2) winner at No. 4 singles. The team of Bowser and Luke Boyd (sophomore, Fort Dodge) won at No. 2 doubles 8-6.
“We didn’t compete with the fire we needed to against Augustana,” said first-year coach Bryan Mours. “Our fire returned versus St. Ambrose, and we competed at a much higher level.”
Against St. Ambrose, the Dutch recorded wins from Nick Rohner (senior, Wichita, Kan.) at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-4, Bowser and Boyd at No. 2 doubles 9-7, and Rohner and Joel Druvenga (junior, Spencer) at No. 3 doubles 8-6.
“This was a tough triangular,” said Mours. “All three teams were solid. We had our opportunities but it just wasn’t our day.”
Mours was pleased with the performance of Bowser.
“Dan Bowser had a great day,” he said. “He won two doubles matches and pulled out a great singles match against Augustana.”
Central returns home for a triangular Saturday at H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse, taking on Cornell College at 8 a.m. and Graceland at 2 p.m. Graceland defeated the Dutch last year at Pella 8-1 but Central’s scheduled match with Cornell later in the season was cancelled because of bad road conditions.
