Jan. 26, 2008Wartburg outdistances Central, 83-67
WAVERLY—Wartburg College used a commanding rebounding advantage to outdistance the Central College women’s basketball team Saturday, 83-67.
The Dutch were outboarded 60-32 in falling to 4-14 overall and 2-7 in Iowa Conference play. A slow start complicated matters as Central trailed 9-0 before a jumper by forward Katie McKim (freshman, Creston) got the Dutch on the board with 13:27 left in the half. Wartburg (11-6 overall, 4-5 conference) went on to take a 53-29 lead at the half.
Central did mount a challenge midway through the second half, using a 15-6 burst to pull within 67-55 with 7:44 remaining but came no closer.
“Defensively we did a much better job on their posts,” coach Natalie Nakic said. “But we didn’t do a very good job of stopping them in transition and our rebounding struggled.”
Center Andrea Clark (freshman, Guthrie Center) had 16 points for Central, while McKim added 13. Forward Emily De Jong (junior, Ankeny) and guard Ashley Gerst (sophomore, Columbus Junction, Wapello HS) each scored 12 points. De Jong was Central’s top rebounder with seven while guard Jordan Waddell (freshman, Guthrie Center) had a game-high seven assists. Wartburg guard Elizabeth Campbell racked up 26 points and 12 rebounds.
Central’s depth in the guard court was limited. Guard Mary Swanson (senior, Jefferson, Jefferson-Scranton HS) was injured in practice last week and is out indefinitely while guard Brittney Carlson (sophomore, Oskaloosa) became ill during the game and missed the entire second half.
“I thought Katie McKim stepped up and played well and so did Andrea Clark,” Nakic said.
The Dutch return home Wednesday for a league women’s-men’s doubleheader with Cornell College, tipping off at 6 p.m. at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. The Rams topped Central 81-65 at Mount Vernon Jan. 5 and are 7-9 overall and 2-6 in conference play heading into a non-conference game with Beloit (Wis.) Monday night. Live stats will be available for Wednesday’s games on the Central athletics Web site at www.central.edu/athletics.
