Record-setting Clark leads 3-point barrage in Dutch win

PELLA—Guard Zak Clark (senior, Fort Dodge, St. Edmond HS) scored 22 points and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career as the Central College men’s basketball team held off Simpson College 76-67 Monday.

Clark also broke the school career 3-point record as he led a long-range barrage by the Dutch (10-5 overall, 3-5 Iowa Conference) who drilled 15-of-23 shots from beyond the arc (65.2 percent). Clark hit six 3-point goals in eight attempts and sank a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to become the 25th member of Central’s 1,000-point club. He now has 1,001. Clark’s 156 career 3-point goals top the mark of 150 established by Chris Nelson (2002-06).

“It was nice to have Zak back offensively,” coach Mike Boschee said. “He’d been struggling a little. We’re such a different team when he’s able to knock down shots.”

Central, which led 42-29 at the half, pushed the advantage to 50-42, but had to withstand a furious Simpson rally. The Storm ran off 17 unanswered points to make it 50-49 with 10 minutes remaining. But Clark and guard Justin Madsen (sophomore, Fort Dodge, St. Edmond HS) hit back-to-back threes to fuel an 11-2 Central run. Simpson (5-11 overall, 2-5 conference) climbed to within 68-64 with 1:04 left but Central hit 8-of-10 free throws in the final minute.

“Simpson put a real good run on us and tested us a little bit,” Boschee said. “But I thought that the guys showed some character and responded well down the stretch.”

Guard Miguel Ley (sophomore, San Antonio, Texas, Judson HS) had 19 points and five assists for the Dutch while guard Brett DeHoogh (senior, Clive, Valley HS) had 10 points, four assists and six rebounds. Forward Keith Pedersen (senior, Jefferson, Jefferson-Scranton HS) had a team-high eight rebounds.

Central travels to Waverly Saturday for a women’s-men’s league doubleheader at Wartburg College, with the men’s game tipping off at approximately 4 p.m. Central was an 89-83 winner when the teams met at Pella Dec. 5. Wartburg has a 3-4 conference record and a 6-10 overall mark after a 60-56 win over Luther Monday.

Saturday’s games will be broadcast live on KRLS-FM (92.1) with Jamie Brockman. The broadcast can also be accessed via www.kniakrls.com
