Simpson outraces Central 86-58

PELLA—No. 9-rated Simpson College sprinted to a 16-point halftime lead and went on to post an 86-58 Iowa Conference victory over the Central College women’s basketball squad Monday.      

Simpson remained unbeaten in league play at 7-0 and is 15-1 overall.

Central (4-13 overall, 2-6 conference) placed three players in double figures with guard Brittney Carlson (sophomore, Oskaloosa) scoring 11 while guards Ashley Gerst (sophomore, Columbus Junction, Wapello HS) and Jordan Waddell (freshman, Guthrie Center) each adding 10 points and five assists. Forward Erin Benson (senior, Omaha, Neb., Northwest HS) had eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Neither team was hot from the field in the fast-paced contest with Simpson connecting on 38.9 percent of its shots to Central’s 32.3 percent. But Simpson held a commanding 65-41 rebounding advantage and snared 32 offensive boards.

Central journeys to Waverly Saturday for a women’s-men’s league doubleheader at Wartburg College, tipping off at 2 p.m. In the teams’ earlier meeting at Pella Dec. 5, the Knights scored a runaway 91-61 win. Wartburg  is 3-4 in the league and 10-5 overall after suffering a 56-50 home-court loss to rival Luther College Monday.
