Top-ranked Wartburg trips Central

PELLA—Top-ranked Wartburg College wasted little time in rolling past the Central College wrestling team Thursday night with a 44-6 decision.

Wartburg (15-0 overall, 2-0 vs. Iowa Conference opponents) recorded four falls and a technical fall as well as a couple of forfeit victories against the young Dutch. Central (0-9-1 overall, 0-2 against conference opponents) picked up its points when Ted Dirkx (freshman, Alleman, North Polk HS) received a forfeit win at 285 pounds.

“I thought we wrestled poorly,” first-year coach Eric Van Kley said. “I don’t think we were ready to wrestle and I’ll take the blame for that. We didn’t look prepared and Wartburg was the aggressor at all weights. Wartburg is an outstanding team. They wrestle very aggressively and we need to work harder and learn that style.”

Van Kley did like what he saw from Dirkx in an exhibition match following the meet.

“Ted Dirkx wrestled a very good match,” he said. “He’s an extremely good kid, very coachable and a pleasure to have on the team.”

Wartburg, winner of last weekend’s Division III crown at the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, left several top wrestlers in Waverly as the Knights prepare for a Saturday dual with rival Luther College.

Central gets a weekend off before gearing up for a challenging day at the Iowa Conference Duals in Decorah next Saturday, Jan. 26. The Dutch take on 20th-ranked Buena Vista at 8:30 a.m. then tackle Cornell College, previously rated 19th in Division III, at 10 a.m. At 1 p.m. Central meets the host, No. 7-ranked Luther, at 2:30 p.m., then face 12th-rated Loras.
