Waddell hits 21 but Dutch fall

PELLA—Central College guard Jordan Waddell (freshman, Guthrie Center) poured in a game-high 21 points off the bench but a second-half surge carried Coe College to an 87-72 Iowa Conference women’s basketball victory Wednesday.  

Central (4-11 overall, 2-4 conference) saw an early 23-11 lead evaporate as Coe closed to 42-38 at halftime. A 12-2 burst put Coe (10-4 overall, 3-2 conference) up 55-48 with 13:56 remaining and the Kohawks stretched the lead to as many as 17 points.

Wadell, who erupted for a career-high 20 points in a Saturday loss at Buena Vista, topped that total by hitting six 3-point shots, including her first four. Forward Erin Benson (junior, Omaha, Neb., Northwest HS) had 16 points while guard Ashley Gerst (sophomore, Columbus Junction, Wapello HS) had 13 with four assists and center Andrea Clark (freshman, Guthrie Center) had 11 points and six rebounds.

But Coe held a commanding 45-27 advatnage on the board, getting 18 points and 10 rebounds from forward Amber Karkosh. The Kohawks shot 50 percent from the field to Central’s 43.6 percent.

Central travels to the University of Dubuque Saturday for a women’s-men’s doubleheader at 2 p.m. The Dutch split a pair of games with Dubuque last season. The Spartans are 7-7 overfall and 1-4 in the conference after stumbling at Luther 62-44 Wednesday.
