Central loses battle at Buena Vista

STORM LAKE—The Central College men’s basketball team dropped a 65-58 Iowa Conference contest to Buena Vista Saturday, leaving the Dutch with a three-game losing streak.

After starting the season 8-1 and averaging 88.1 points a game in non-conference play, Central (8-4 overall, 1-4) has scored 60 points in just one Iowa Conference clash, an 89-83 win over Wartburg Dec. 5. Buena Vista (11-4 overall, 5-0 Iowa Conference) extended its winning streak to five games.

“Buena Vista is a real good team,” said head coach Mike Boschee. “They have great balance and are difficult to guard.”

Guard Miguel Ley (sophomore, San Antonio, Texas, Judson HS) led all scorers with 14 points while forward Keith Pedersen (senior, Jefferson, Jefferson-Scranton HS) pulled down a team-high eight boards.

The Dutch pulled even as late as 11:11 remaining after a 3-pointer by guard Justin Madsen (sophomore, Fort Dodge, St. Edmond HS) made it 41-41, but the Beavers responded with an 8-0 run and never looked back.

“It was a good game throughout,” said Boschee. “We had our chances at the end, but we came up a little short.”

Central takes on Coe College Wednesday in a women’s-men’s doubleheader at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium, with the men’s game tipping off at approximately 8 p.m. Coe (7-6 overall, 2-2 Iowa Conference) had its five-game winning streak snapped Saturday in a 73-62 loss at Wartburg. Central and Coe split a pair of games last season.
