Jan. 5, 2008Hot 3-point shooting pushes Central past Cornell
MOUNT VERNON—The Central College women’s basketball team utilized 10 3-pointers to surge past Cornell College 81-65 Saturday in an Iowa Conference clash. Central (3-9 overall, 1-2 Iowa Conference) shot 10-for-19 from behind the arc (52.6 percent) while holding Cornell (5-5 overall, 0-2 Iowa Conference) to 21.1 percent from behind the 3-point line. The 10 3-pointers nearly matched the school record of 12 set against Cornell on Feb. 4, 2006. The Dutch have now won three of their last four games and snapped the Rams' four-game winning streak
Central was productive inside as well. Center Andrea Clark (freshman, Guthrie Center) had a team high 19 points and seven rebounds.
“Andrea played very well,” said head coach Natalie Nakic. “We knew we needed to get the ball inside to her. The fact that we hit so many threes really helped complement her play in the interior.”
Guard Brittney Carlson (sophomore, Oskaloosa) dished out a team-high eight assists as the Dutch had four players score in double digits.
Central's 3-point barrage was led by guard Jordan Waddell (freshman, Guthrie Center) who shot 3-for-5 from long distance. The Dutch also got eight points from forward Emily De Jong (junior, Ankeny) who returned after a semester in Europe.
“Emily came in and made a couple of big stops on the inside,” said Nakic. “She has made the transition back extremely easily.”
After trailing by as many as seven early in the contest, the Dutch never looked back after guard Mary Swanson (senior, Jefferson, Jefferson-Scranton HS) nailed a 3-pointer with 7:08 left in the first half to give Central a 21-19 advantage.
“We got off to a slow start,” said Nakic. “Once our defense settled in and forced them into bad shots, we started to hit some of our own. All-in-all it was a total team effort and was a good win for us.”
Central is home Wednesday for a league women’s-men’s doubleheader with Luther College. The women’s game tips off at 6 p.m. at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. The Norse are 2-1 in conference play and 5-6 overall after downing Buena Vista University 81-64 on Saturday.
