Central stumbles at Nebraska Wesleyan

LINCOLN, NEB.—Freshman center Andrea Clark (Guthrie Center) had a career-best 16 points but the Central College women’s basketball team suffered a late first half drought and fell at Nebraska Wesleyan Saturday 79-64.

Clark, who also had eight rebounds and a block, was among three Central players in double figures. Guard Ashley Gerst (sophomore, Columbus Junction, Wapello HS) had 13 points and guard Megan Carman (junior, Newton) added 10 with five rebounds and three assists.

Central (0-8) took a 20-15 lead with 8:51 left in the first half when Jordan Waddell (freshman, Guthrie Center) knocked down a 3-point goal. But Nebraska Wesleyan (3-6) ran off 17 unanswered points for a 32-20 advantage at the 4:12 mark. The Prairie Wolves carried a 37-24 lead into intermission.

Central whittled the margin to 42-38 with 14:59 remaining, but a 7-0 Nebraska Wesleyan burst stymied the charge.

Central shot just 31.3 percent in the first half and 35.5 percent for the game while committing 26 turnovers. Nebraska Wesleyan held a 52-40 rebounding advantage while shooting 43.4 percent from the field, including 50 percent in the second half.

The pre-Christmas schedule wraps up Monday when the Dutch travel to New Ulm, Minn. for a women’s-men’s doubleheader at Martin Luther College (Minn.). The women’s game tips off at 4 p.m. with the men following at 6 p.m. It will be Central’s first-ever meeting with the Knights, who are 0-9.
