Dec. 8, 2007Big first half carries Grinnell 86-71
GRINNELL.—Grinnell College jumped to an early 13-2 advantage and outscored the Central College women’s basketball team Saturday 86-71.
Central (0-7) hit just 22.6 percent from the field in the first half and trailed at intermission 44-21. The Dutch improved to 54.8 percent in the second half but couldn’t overcome the big deficit.
Guards Brittney Carlson (sophomore, Oskaloosa) and Megan Carman (junior, Newton) each had 16 points. Guard Mary Swanson (senior, Jefferson, Jefferson-Scranton HS) came off the bench to score 13 pointss while guard Ashley Gerst (sophomore, Columbus Junction, Wapello HS) had five assists. Center Andrea Clark (freshman, Guthrie Center) had seven rebounds.
Grinnell (1-6) shot 47.7 percent for the game and outrebounded Central 43-39.
The Dutch are off for the week to focus on fall semester exams. Next Saturday Central is at Lincoln, Neb. to take on Nebraska Wesleyan in a 2 p.m. game. The Dutch hold a 6-1 lead over Nebraska Wesleyan in the all-time series but haven’t played the Prairie Wolves since 2003. Nebraska Wesleyan will take a 2-6 record into the contest.
