Wartburg outshoots Dutch

PELLA—A slow start was the difference again for the Central College women’s basketball team in a 91-61 Iowa Conference setback against Wartburg College Wednesday.  

Leading 6-5 after 3 minutes, the Dutch (0-6 overall, 0-2 conference) were outscored 34-11 the rest of the half and trailed 39-17 at intermission. Central shot just 29.2 percent (7-24) in the first half. The Dutch improved to 52 percent shooting in the second half but Wartburg (5-1 overall, 1-1 conference) connected on 60.6 percent and hit 53.1 percent for the night.

Forward Erin Benson (junior, Omaha, Neb., Northwest HS) had 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals for Central while guard Brittney Carlson (sophomore, Oskaloosa) had 14 points and four rebounds. Central was outrebounded 39-27 and committed 26 turnovers.

The Dutch journey to Grinnell College for a 3 p.m. non-conference game Saturday.
