Dec. 1, 2007Jones is lone victor for Dutch
INDIANOLA — Facing stiff competition at the Simpson Invitational, 149-pounder Lance Jones (freshman, St. Charles, I-35 HS) wasCentral College wrestling team’s only winner Saturday.
After dropping his first match, Jones responded by defeating Elliot Smith of New York University 7-5 before he feel in his next match.
“Lance was competitive in all his matches,” said head coach Eric Van Kley. “He wrestled well in all his matches and was especially good in the top position.”
Despite Jones’s solid performance, Central only scored 0.5 points in the invitational. Wartburg took the title with 187.5 points.
Van Kley was not deterred by team standings.
“The team competed hard,” he said. “We faced some of the better teams in the Iowa Conference, and we saw what we have to do to get better.”
The Dutch take the mat again Tuesday, Dec. 4, in a dual against Augustana (Ill.) in Rock Island, Ill., at 7:30 p.m.
