Nov. 20, 2007Central 17th in rankings
PELLA—Central College is 17th in the final CSTV/American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III poll.
The Dutch were 27-9 and captured their 12th straight Iowa Conference title and their 17th league crown overall. They also claimed their ninth league tournament championship and gained their 11th NCAA Division III Tournament berth.
Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) took the Division III title Saturday in Bloomington, Ill., defeating Wis.-Whitewater. Those schools occupy the top two spots in the final rankings. Wis.-Whitewater was the winner of Central’s regional in St. Paul, Minn. Nov. 8-10. The Dutch raced past Carleton College (Minn.) in the opening round before falling in five games to No. 11 St. Thomas. The Tommies then suffered a five-game loss to Wis.-Whitewater.
Central moved up a spot from 18th in the previous ratings. No other Iowa schools were listed.
Despite not being ranked in the preseason or picked to win the league title, Central quickly vaulted into the rankings. The team’s final No. 17 ranking was its highest of the season while the lowest was No. 24 Oct. 16. Since 1997, the Dutch have been ranked for 123 weeks, the sixth-highest total in that span in Division III.
