Central’s Ray pins way to Augsburg title

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.—Central College freshman Kyle Ray (freshman, Greenfield, Nodaway Valley HS) scored three straight falls en route to the Bronze title at 157 pounds at the Auggie-Brute Adidas Open wrestling tourney Saturday.

The field was divided into Gold, Silver and Bronze pools based on individual records and experience in the meet hosted by NCAA Division III power Augsburg College (Minn.). No team scores were kept.

Ray pinned Chris Herman of Jamestown (N.D.) in 1:09, Wesley Ronchi of Itasca CC (Minn.) in 1:57 and unattached wrestler Matt Mueller in 4:53. Unattached wrestler Trae Reed defaulted in the finals.

The Dutch also got a second-place finish from Curtis Hobbs (freshman, Grinnell) in the Bronze pool at 141 pounds. After winning a pair of decisions, Hobbs was edged in the championship match 3-2 by Zach Mullins of Briar Cliff.

Josh Stutting (sophomore, Clintonville, Wis.) was seventh at 174 pounds, dropping two matches but getting a fall in 1:43 over Ryan Gregg of Wis.-Eau Claire.

Nick Johnson (sophomore, San Antonio, Texas, James Madison HS) was 1-2 in the Silver pool at 141 pounds, as was Lance Jones (freshman, St. Charles, I-35 HS) in the Silver pool at 149 and Anthony Rollins (freshman, Dyersville, Western Dubuque HS) in the Silver pool at 184.

Central breaks for the Thanksgiving holiday and comes back with a dual at Cedar Rapids against seventh-ranked Coe College Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
