Jones, Ray score falls over York

SIOUX CITY—Central College freshmen Lance Jones (St. Charles, I-35 HS) and Kyle Ray (Greenfield, Nodaway Valley HS) each recorded falls but the Dutch wrestlers dropped a pair of meets Wednesday night.

Morningside blanked the Dutch in the opener 57-0 before York (Neb.) was a 36-24 winner as Central dropped to 0-3 in the young season.

Jones pinned York’s John Carr in 3:51 at 157 pounds while Ray needed just 30 seconds to stop Clayton Davis at 165 pounds. Jones is now 2-1. Central’s Brandon Rose (freshman, Lonedell, Mo., Sullivan HS) and Nick Johnson (sophomore, San Antonio, Texas, James Madison HS) received forfeit wins against York at 125 and 149 pounds, respectively.

“I was much more pleased with the way we came out in the second match,” first-year coach Eric Van Kley said. “We came out a little more aggressive and it was nice to get a couple of falls. But it came down to 197 pounds and heavyweight, and we came up short. We gave up too many bonus points.”

The Dutch have a big day Saturday, traveling to the Augsburg Invitational at Minneapolis, opening at 9 a.m.

“We’re an extremely young team,” Van Kley said. “We have to focus on improvement each time out. Tonight was disappointing but we’ve got to have short memories because in two days we’ll hit the mats again.

“We’ll get a lot of matches Saturday and that will help. Our guys just need more experience so it will be good to get them more mat time. We definitely hope to improve on some of the things we saw tonight.”
