Central lands six on all-league squad

PELLA—Central College landed a record six players on the all-Iowa Conference men’s soccer squad.

The Dutch had five all-league players in 2005 and 2006.

Senior forward Cody Stoermer (Coralville, Iowa City West HS) and junior midfielder Cruz Herr (Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) were each honored for the third time and were first-team picks. Stoermer was also a first-team selection in 2005 and a second-team choice last season. Herr was tabbed for the second team in 2005 and the first team last year.

Second-team selections included goalkeeper Greg Foote (junior, Maple Grove, Minn.), defender Scott Erie (junior, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS), midfielder Blake Scott (senior, Norwalk) and midfielder Cody Jandik (freshman, Cedar Rapids, Cedar Valley Christian HS). Scott was a second-team pick in 2005. Defender Daniel Hurd (freshman, West Des Moines, Valley HS) received honorable mention.

Loras defender Matt Brumfield was the league MVP while the Duhawksk’ Dan Rothert was coach of the year.

Coach Garry Laidlaw’s Central squad posted a 14-4-3 overall record and a 6-2 league mark, reaching the semifinals of the conference tournament.

Stoermer broke Central’s career records for points (137), assists (39), shots (304), shots on goal (154), game-winning goals (10) and games started (77) while setting school season marks for goals (19), assists (12), shots (91), shots on goal (52) and points (50).

Herr had three goals and two assists from the midfield.

Scott set a school career mark for games played (79). He had four goals and three assists this season. Foote posted a 14-3-2 record as goalkeeper, allowing 0.91 goals per game and recording 47 saves in 19 games. Erie had two assists and Jandik was Central’s second-leading scorer with 11 goals and six assists.
