PELLA—Central College forwards Cody Stoermer (senior, Coralville, Iowa City West HS) and Kelli Hancock (sophomore, Cedar Falls) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Soccer Teams.
Stoermer, an exercise science-health promotion major with a 3.48 cumulative grade point average, was a first-team pick for the men’s squad. Hancock, an exercise science-athletic training major with a 3.91 GPA, was a second-team selection for the women’s squad. Stoermer is now under consideration for academic all-America honors.
Also named to the college division men’s squad were Loras College midfielder Santiago Mejia and defender Nate Minkel.
Iowans on the women’s college division team include midfielder Katie Ward of Cornell College and forward Rachel Oswald of Wartburg College on the first team, goalkeeper Rachel Coleman of Wartburg on the second team and midfielder Marisha Lenz of Morningside College, defender Ashley Bussan of the University of Dubuque and forward Maria Prendergast of Loras on the third team.
Stoermer, a four-year letterwinner and the 2005 team MVP, is Central’s all-time career points leader with 137 and broke the school season goals record with 19 this year. Combined with his 12 assists, Stoermer has 50 points, also a season mark. He also has set school records for most shots in a game (14), season (93) and career (304), most career games started (76) and most game-winning goals in a season (6) and career (10). He’s a two-time all-Iowa Conference selection, was tabbed for the NSCAA Division III All-West Region team in 2005 and the D3kicks.com All-West Region team in 2006. Stoermer has helped the Dutch post a 14-4-2 record and land a berth in the Iowa Conference tournament semifinals.
Hancock, a two-year starter, is Central’s second-leading scorer with eight goals and five assists for 21 points. She’s helped lead the Dutch to a 10-5-2 record and also pushed the squad into the league tournament semifinals.
The Central women’s squad meets Wartburg College in a conference tournament semifinal at Dubuque Friday at 11 a.m. The Dutch men also tackle Wartburg at 7 p.m. Friday’s winners advance to championship matches Saturday to determine the conference’s automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Division III tournament.
