PELLA—After falling behind Augustana College (Ill.), the Central College men’s soccer team answered with a pair of first-half goals to win 2-1 Tuesday.
Despite controlling possession much of the game, Central (13-4-1) conceded a goal off Augustana’s (7-7-3) first shot 24:07 into the match.
The Dutch equalized when midfielder Nicholas DeLucia (freshman, Urbana, Ill.) scored 48 seconds later off an assist from forward Scott Erie (junior, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS).
“I am pleased Nick rewarded himself with a goal in his first career start,” said head coach Garry Laidlaw.
With 3:27 remaining in the half, midfielder Cruz Herr (junior, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) scored the game-winning goal off assists from midfielder Chris Purdue (junior, La Crescent, Minn.) and midfielder Derek Farnworth (freshman, Mooresville, Ind.).
“I thought we played an excellent first half,” said Laidlaw. “In the second half we didn’t play well and Augustana upped the pressure. I am pleased with the fact that we came back after falling down early. It is a good time of the season to know we can do that.”
The Dutch close out their regular season on Friday at 2 p.m. when they travel to St. Paul, Minn. to battle Hamline (8-6-1). Central fell to Hamline 2-1 in last year’s season opener in Pella.
