Oct. 20, 2007Stoermer breaks point record in win
PELLA—The Central College men’s soccer team closed out its Iowa Conference regular season with an offensive outburst, downing Luther 5-0 Saturday.
Forward Cody Stoermer (senior, Coralville, Iowa City West HS) added another record to his already impressive career as he broke the season points mark with one goal and two assists to give him a 45-point campaign.
Stoermer was not the only one to get in the action for Central (12-4-1 overall, 6-2 conference) as forward Clint Schreiber (junior, South Elgin, Ill.) started the scoring 10:51 into the match. Stoermer scored on a penalty kick in the 29th minute and defender Dan Hurd (freshman, West Des Moines, Valle HS) made the halftime score 3-0 after taking an assist from midfielder Blake Scott (senior, Norwalk) with 28 seconds remaining.
“I thought we played very well,” said coach Garry Laidlaw. “Luther is a good team, and it was good result for us.”
The Dutch did not let up in the second half as midfielder Nicholas DeLucia (freshman, Urbana, Ill.) used a Stoermer assist toscore 13:18 into the period. Midfielder Jason Winlsow (senior, Loveland, Colo.) capped off the scoring with 2:49 remaining off an assist from midfielder Clayton Boeyink (freshman, Pella).
Goalkeeper Greg Foote (junior, Maple Grove, Minn.) recorded six saves in the shutout. The blanking adds to Foote’s career-shutout record of 17.
“I was glad we kept a clean sheet,” said Laidlaw. “We’ve leaked in a few goals lately, and I thought we had a better defensive performance today.”
Despite suffering two conference losses, Laidlaw is happy with the way the team is playing.
“We still have a lot to play for,” he said. “We want to be peaking towards the end of the year for the conference tournament. Hopefully we can carry this momentum through the next two matches to be prepared for the conference tournament.”
The Dutch stand third in the league and in position to host a first-round game in the six-team tournament.
Central returns Tuesday with a men’s/women’s doubleheader against Augustana College (Ill.). The Vikings took a 7-5-3 mark into a Saturday game with North Park College (Ill.) after winning their last three matches. They’re 2-0 all-time against Central but the teams haven’t met since 1994, the second year of the Dutch program.
