Oct. 19, 2007Dutch advance to semifinals
IOWA CITY—Central College moved on to the Iowa Conference women’s tennis tourney semifinals with a 5-1 decision over Cornell College Friday night.
The win puts the third-seeded Dutch (10-3) against second-seeded Luther College (10-1) in a 9 a.m. match Saturday at the University of Iowa tennis complex. The Norse swept Central at Pella Oct. 14, 9-0.
Central took two of three doubles matches Friday against Cornell, then recorded three singles victories to end the match. In conference tournament play, individual matches are halted once the team outcome is determined.
Katie Moklestad (senior, Boone) was a 6-4, 6-0 winner at No. 3 singles, while Faith Bliss (sophomore, Ottumwa) won by default at No. 4 and Whitney Visser (senior, Sioux Falls, S.D., Lincoln HS) prevailed at No. 5 6-0, 6-3. The Dutch were leading in a pair of other singles matches when play was stopped.
It was Central’s second victory over Cornell (7-8). The Dutch scored a 6-3 win at Mount Vernon Sept. 1.
In Friday’s other match, fourth-seeded Wartburg shut out fifth-seeded Simpson 5-0. The Knights must deal with top-seeded Coe in the other 9 a.m. match.
The championship and third-place matches will start at approximately noon. Cornell and Simpson meet in the fifth-place match at Cedar Rapids at 9 a.m.
Central will be looking to improve on last year’s fourth-place finish in the league tournament.
