Oct. 17, 2007Central handles Coe
PELLA--The Central College men’s soccer team utilized points from unlikely sources to drop Coe 6-1 in an Iowa Conference match Wednesday on a noticeably soggy field.
Central (11-4-1 overall, 5-2 conference) defenders Dan Hurd (freshman, West Des Moines, Valley HS) and Erik Lundgren (sophomore, Long Grove, Ill.) notched goals for the Dutch. Lundgren’s goal was the first of his collegiate career while Hurd’s was his second. Midfielder Blake Scott (senior, Norwalk) scored his second goal of the season and goalkeeper Greg Foote (junior, Maple Grove, Minn.) added an assist.
“It was nice to get contributions from the center backs (Hurd and Lundgren),” said head coach Garry Laidlaw. “Those guys work hard back there and they usually receive little glory.”
Hurd’s goal opened the scoring 13:25 into the match off an assist from midfielder Jason Winslow (senior, Loveland, Colo.).
In addition to points from unusual contributors, the Dutch received two goals and assist from the familiar feet of forward Cody Stoermer (senior, Coralville, Iowa City West HS). Stoermer’s five-point performance puts him two points behind the season record held by Kyle Halfpop’s 43-point campaign from 2004.
Stoermer added the second tally of the afternoon off an assist from defender Ben Heithoff (junior, Council Bluffs, Abraham Lincoln HS) in the 26th minute. Midfielder Cody Jandik (freshman, Cedar Rapids, Cedar Valley Christian HS) added to his impressive campaign with a goal from Foote’s assist 9 minutes into the second half. Midfielder Cruz Herr (junior, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy) gave an assist on Stoermer’s second goal in the 65th minute. Scott notched his goal off a Stoermer free kick 3:46 later to make the score 5-0.
“The conditions were difficult today with the amount of raining falling and the amount of water on the pitch,” said Laidlaw. “I thought that we responded to the conditions quite well and I was pleased with the offensive effort.”
Coe added its goal in the 73rd minute off a rocket from Yusuke Okada. Central quickly responded when Lundgren scored his goal off an assist from midfielder Derek Farnworth (freshman, Mooresville, Ind.) 50 seconds later.
The Dutch return to action Saturday at 3 p.m. in a crucial conference showdown against Luther with the winner potentially claiming third place in the league. The match is also Senior Day, celebrating the careers of: Scott, Stoermer, Tyman Wiley (forward, Palo, Cedar Rapids Kennedy) and Winslow.
“Saturday is going to be an opportunity to celebrate of the careers of four very special players to the Dutch soccer team and four special people to Central College,” said Laidlaw.
