Oct. 10, 2007Dutch get draw at Simpson
INDIANOLA—A scoreless second half produced a 1-1 double-overtime draw for the Central College women’s soccer team at Simpson College on a brisk Wednesday evening.
Simpson’s Mollie McMahon got the Storm quickly on the board with a goal with 41:59 to play in the first half. The Dutch (6-4-2 overall, 0-3-2 Iowa Conference) then blanked Simpson (3-6-1 overall, 1-2-1 conference) for nearly 107 minutes.
Central tied the score with 1:49 left in the half as defender Sarah Frese (junior, Marshalltown) rifled in an unassisted goal from 30 yards out.
The balance of play was largely even. Central outshot Simpson 12-11 and held a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks. Dutch goalkeeper Michelle Gilbert (senior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) made five saves.
The Dutch played without their second-leading scorer, forward Kelli Hancock (sophomore, Cedar Falls). She’s sidelined indefinitely by injury.
Central and Simpson are in a fight to gain a spot in the six-team conference tournament. Simpson has a one-point edge for sixth place and has five league contests remaining. Central has just three conference games left.
The Dutch remain on the road Saturday, traveling to Storm Lake for a league men’s/women’s doubleheader at Buena Vista University. The women’s game kicks off at 3 p.m. The Beavers are 2-11 overall and 0-4 in league play.
