ASBURY—A youthful Central College women’s golf team closed a year of transition with a sixth-place finish at the Iowa Conference tournament Saturday.
Improving by 5 strokes over Friday’s round at the par-72 Meadows Golf Course at Asbury, Central finished at 360-366-378-373—1477. Wartburg College posted a 12-shot victory at 318-318-351-340—1327.
Eva Downes (sophomore, Woodstock, Ill., Marian Catholic Central HS) finished in 18th at 85-84-95-87—351. Wartburg’s Stephanie Burns breezed to a 13-stroke victory in the medalist race at 75-78-83-75—311.
Central freshman Nicole Wenstrand (freshman, Essex) tied for 21st at 89-87-91-91—358 with Jordan Williams (junior, Pella) tied for 26th at 88-94-93-92—367 and Meghan Swella (junior, Yucca Valley, Calif.) in 33rd at 98-101-107-103—409. Lindsey Ellenson (freshman, Amana, Clear Creek-Amana HS) filled in at Central’s fifth spot for the final weekend and shot 99-107—206.
Coach Jodee Schaben’s squad is tentatively slated to open the spring season in mid-March at the Dutch Desert Shootout in Laveen, Ariz.
