Dutch get second at Wartburg

WAVERLY—Hannah Anderson (sophomore, Goodell, Garner-Hayfield HS) placed seventh to lead the Central College women’s cross country team to a second-place team finish at the five-team Dan Huston Invitational Saturday.  Anderson’s 6,000-meter finish of 25:00 was a minute behind Iowa Central’s Lydia Kosgei’s winning time. Amy Ledvina (sophomore, Toledo, South Tama HS) finished in 10th at 25:19, followed by Molly Von Holten (freshman, Walnut, Ill.) in 15th (25:57), Jenni Hufford (sophomore, Polk City, Ankeny HS) in 16th (26:21), Meghan Burt (freshman, Slater, Ankeny Christian Academy HS) in 17th (26:21),  Connie Eshelman (junior, Bridgewater, Nodaway Valley HS) in 18th (26:22) and Amber Mayer (sophomore, Essex) in 19th (26:33).

The Dutch were running without returning NCAA Div. III Championship qualifier Angie Berry (sophomore, Norwalk) and Jess Clark (junior, Port Byron, Ill.).

Wartburg finished first with 24 points followed by Central with 65 and Wis.-Platteville with 81.

Chase Ungs (senior, Ames, Gilbert HS) led the Central men with a 30th-place individual finish at 30:26 as Central placed sixth in an eight-team overall with 184 points. 

Cory Fitzsimmons (sophomore, Pella) finished in 31st at 30:38 with Tyler Husak (junior, Montour, South Tama HS) in 37th (31:18), Jaron Byrum (junior, Mount Union, New London HS) in 38th (31:23), Derek Townsend (junior, Perry) in 48th (33:25), Dustin Draisey (freshman, Keota) in 50th (33:42) and Austin Vondracek in 51st (33:59).

Iowa Central finished in first with a 23 points with the Tritons’ Joshua Sawe the individual winner in  26:44. Augustana (Ill.) was second with 58. Central will face its stiffest regular-season test next Saturday, racing against many of the region’s top squads at the Jim Drews/Tori Neubauer Invitational conducted by Wis.-La Crosse at West Salem, Wis. The Dutch women were 23rd in a 28-team field there last year while the Central men’s squad was 23rd in a 31-team field.
