Central suffers league loss to Cornell

MOUNT VERNON—In a match that saw few scoring chances for either team, the Central College women’s soccer team fell in an Iowa Conference battle to Cornell 2-1 Wednesday.

Cornell (4-3-1 overall, 2-1 conference) waited little time to open the scoring as Leanne Carberry scored on a breakaway 2:38 into the match.

“After they scored in the third minute we were really chasing the game from then.” said head coach Rick Burns. “It was disappointing because it was the first breakaway goal we have conceeded this year.”

The Rams added to their lead eight minutes into the second half off a goal from Katie Ward. Central (6-3-1 overall, 0-2-1 conference) responded in the 69th minute when midfielder Jenna Hindman (sophomore, Swisher, Prairie HS) scored an unassisted goal. Any momentum gained from the goal did not materialize as the Dutch were not able to create any more scoring opportunities.

“It was a hard-fought, even match,” said Burns. “It’s disappointing because we had the game in our sights, and it was a winnable match.”

Burns’s sentiments reflect the statistics as the Rams outshot the Dutch 13-9 with Central holding a 4-2 corner kick advantage.

Central goalkeeper Michelle Gilbert (senior, West Des Moines, Valley) recorded six saves in the match.

The Dutch return to action on Saturday when they take on Wartburg in an Iowa Conference showdown in Pella at 1 p.m.. Central will be looking to repeat last year’s result when the Dutch won a 4-3 thriller in Waverly.
