Downes improves at league tourny

CEDAR FALLS—Eva Downes (sophomore, Woodstock, Ill., Marian Catholic Central HS) took over sole possession of 15th place individually but the Central College women’s golf team remains sixth at the midpoint of the Iowa Conference women’s golf tournament.

Battling stiff south winds, Downes improved to 85-84—169 after 36 holes at the par-72 Pheasant Ridge Golf Course. Nicole Wenstrand (freshman, Essex) also improved with 89-87—176 and stands 21st. Jordan Williams (junior, Pella) is tied for 27th at 88-94—182, Allison Crooks (freshman, Moline, Ill.) is 32nd at 98-99—197 and Meghan Swella (junior, Yucca Valley, Calif.) is 34th at 98-101—199.

Central, which returned just one starter from last year’s fifth-place squad, is at 360-364—724. Wartburg increased its lead with 318-318—636 with Loras second at 328-324—652. The Dutch slipped a bit further behind fifth-place Coe, which is at 347-346—693.

The 72-hole tournament continues next Friday and Saturday with the final 36 holes at the Meadows Golf Course in Asbury near Dubuque.
