Central opens in sixth at league tourney

CEDAR FALLS—Central College opened in sixth place after one round of the Iowa Conference women’s golf tournament Friday.

Eva Downes (sophomore, Woodstock, Ill., Marian Catholic Central HS) shot 43-42—85 at the par-72 Pheasant Ridge Golf Course and stands tied for 15th. Jordan Williams (junior, Pella) shot 43-45—88 and is tied for 21st, Nicole Wenstrand (freshman, Essex, Shenandoah HS) had 46-43—89 and is tied for 23rd and Allison Crooks (freshman, Moline, Ill., Moline HS) shot 49-49—98 and is tied for 32nd with Meghan Swella (junior, Yucca Valley, Calif.), who had 52-46—98.

Wartburg is the first-round leader at 318, 10 shots in front of Loras. Central is 13 shots back of fifth-place Coe. Wartburg’s Steph Burns leads the medalist race with 75, two strokes better than Simpson’s Noel Triebel.

Central, which returned just one starter from last year’s squad, was fifth in the 2006 league tourney.

Play continues in the 72-hole tournament Saturday at Pheasant Ridge at 9 a.m.  The tourney concludes with 36 holes next Friday and Saturday at the Meadows Golf Course in Asbury near Dubuque.
