Central eighth in tourney
DECORAH—Central College got its most balanced effort of the women’s golf season and finished eighth in the 14-team Luther Invitational Saturday.
Competing at the par-72 Oneota Golf and Country Club in Decorah, the Dutch shot 363. Wartburg was a runaway winner at 316 with Waldorf second at 342 and Luther third at 345.
Jordan Williams (junior, Pella) tied for 28th with 90. Wartburg’s Daina Deery took medalist honors with 76.
Eva Downes (sophomore, Woodstock, Ill., Marian Catholic Central HS), Nicole Wenstrand (freshman, Essex, Shenandoah HS) and Meghan Swella (junior, Yucca Valley, Calif.) shared 32nd for the Dutch with 91 while Aimee Crooks tied for 64th at 107. Complete tournament results are available on the Central athletics Web site at www.central.edu/athletics.
Swella’s round was her career best.
“Meghan was pretty solid from tee to green,” coach Jodee Schaben said.
Central made progress but left room for improvement, Schaben said.
“We struggled off the tee a little bit,” she said. “We didn’t leave ourselves in decent position on our second shot a number of times. We putted very well and our overall short game was good. We just have to be more consistent off the tee.
“But I felt better about today. We came out with four scores in the 90s for the first time. We’re certainly capable of better, but we improved.”
The Dutch make their only home appearance of the fall season at next weekend’s Central Invitational. The tourney will be staged at the par-72 Bos Landen Golf Resort in Pella Friday and at the par-70 Edmundson Golf Course in Oskaloosa Saturday. The Dutch won the four-team tournament last fall.
